Bytta, thanks for your comment. You should do an informal poll at work to see if the image of your boss would be viewed more negatively if he ate lunch from home everday! It'd be interesting to hear some perspectives on it.

Great job on paying the mortgage off! Way to go!!

I used to eat lunch every day. After reading about money saving tips a couple of years ago, I brought lunch every day from home, and then I got sick of it. Now that we only have mortgage debt, I buy lunch 1-2 times a week as a treat and I don't split hairs because of it; the lunch from a cafe nearby is so delicious.

About Helena's article, I think it's true when you are in the upper management. Obviously most of us are nowhere near that position, so being uptight and superficial about our image (when you have so little) sounds ridiculous. But I can imagine if I become the VP or Director of Sales from a top 200 company, I wouldn't worry about spending money on power lunches.

As for me, my lunch habit does not affect my career progress or image. In my office, only my boss goes out to lunch every day. I think that has something to do with the image. Hmm... maybe it's true. I wonder if people would think less of him if he eats home-made lunch at his desk.

Joe, thanks for weighing in - it's hard to beat a dollar a day! I don't think you can make a lunch at home for that amount unless you're bringing Ramen Noodles - and who wants that!?

For a decent lunch meal, I spend about$ 7.65 at the in-house cafeteria. If I do this every day for five days and my wife do the same, this translates into $79.50 a week. More than our alloted monthly grocery budget.

I carried home made foods & sandwich until recently now that all employess can eat at a price of dollar a day.

Jason,
Over the last 10 years I've always worked within walking distance of my house. So I get to cheat - I eat lunch at home every day. I know that it provides some significant cost savings for our family.

Kevin, that's hilarious that you brought the kitchen timer with you - you must be able to fall asleep anywhere, anytime! I hadn't thought about your last advantage, but that's a good one. We often become who we hang with, so if we're hanging with the gossipy, negative complainer - it'll rub off on us!
