6 Warning Signs You Are on the Wrong Career Path

by Jason on October 5, 2010

Yahoo recently ran an article on warning signs you need a new job!

So, I thought I’d post this along with some commentary and ask, “Is a Career Change Right for You?”

Do you need a new career?  Here are the warning signs:

Sign #1 – You want to make more money.

Yahoo says: There’s nothing wrong with wanting a bigger paycheck. It may not happen overnight, but if you’re committed to this goal there are things you can do to work toward it.

I say: Uh, really?  Making more money is a sign you need a new career?  Warren Buffet wants to make more money and he loves what he does!  Who doesn’t want to make more money?

Sign #2 – You are bored with your job.

Yahoo says: Watching the minutes melt away at work isn’t just boring; it’s bad for you and bad for your company.

I say:  Create your own excitement at work.  Challenge your coworkers to a paper football field goal match!  Or, pull the fire alarm.  Otherwise, you might just have to suck it up and get a paycheck until you find that new career.

Sign #3 – You are getting passed over for promotion.

Yahoo says: No matter the job or the circumstances, watching others leapfrog you at work is a difficult thing to endure.

I say: This doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in the wrong field – maybe you’re lazy, or you’re just not competent enough for that promotion.

Sign #4 – You are afraid of getting laid off.

Yahoo says: It’s no secret that the unemployment rate is up, making job security a common concern for many Americans. But if your lack of job security is detracting from your work, it may be time to focus on long-term career stability.

I say: Who isn’t right now?  The Great Recession has changed this for almost everyone.  If your field is experiencing a harsher impact than others because of the economic slowdown, than maybe it’s time to consider a new career.

Sign #5 – You search job postings while at work.

Yahoo says: Trolling for a new job while on the clock isn’t just dangerous; it’s inappropriate. It’s also an indication that all is not well at work.

I say: Well when else are you supposed to look for a new career!?

Sign #6 – You dread waking up in the morning.

Yahoo says: Hitting the snooze button isn’t a warning sign that you’re in the wrong career, but having recurring nightmares about your job could be a signal that it’s time to make a change.

I say:  First, lay off the sleeping pills.  Second, find something you love to do and figure out a way to make money at it.  It’s easier said than done, but pursuing True Wealth will be so much more rewarding.

Readers, What do you think?
