  • Earned $31,000 or less Adjusted Gross Income (AGI), or
  • is on Active Duty Military status and earns AGI of $57,000 or less.

If you meet the qualifications above and live in one of the states listed below, you may qualify for a free state tax filing.  AL, AR, AZ, GA, IA, ID, IN, KY, MI, MN, MO, MS, NY, NC, ND, OK, OR, RI, SC, VA, VT, WV.  If your state is not listed, you can still file your state taxes for $14.95.

On-line Taxes

The website provides a free state filing option for taxpayers under age 20.  That’s really the only qualifier they have and it’s valid for all states, which is really nice.  If you are over age 20, you can still prepare and file your state tax return for $7.95, which is a great price.  They guarantee correct calculations and allow you to review your forms before you pay.

Tax Hawk

If your AGI (adjusted gross income) is $20,000 or less, you can qualify for free state tax filing through Tax Hawk.   For those with income above $20,000 don’t worry – you can still file your federal taxes for free plus have your state taxes done for $12.95.

If you’re willing to fill out your state taxes by hand and mail in the tax forms, you don’t have to pay anything more than the cost of a stamp.  If you used a free federal tax service to complete your federal tax return, you shouldn’t have any problems transferring most of the information over to your state tax forms.
