What to do if you Forget to Sign your Tax Return

by Redeeming Riches on March 16, 2012

This is so a mistake that I would make!  With tax deadlines coming up, there will probably be thousands of Americans who forget to sign their tax documents.  Although the majority of people e-file these days, there is still a significant chunk who still file through good ole fashioned paper.

So what happens if you forget to sign your tax return?!  Well, the good news is that the IRS will not be coming after you.  Although most people despise the IRS, the IRS is still run by humans.  This is good news for you if you forgot to sign your tax return!

Reminder #1: Sign your tax return and double check!

Suppose you forget to sign your tax return.  Once it arrives to the IRS and they notice, your return will be labeled “invalid” and be sent back to you to sign it.  You’ll most likely get a letter in the mail about this and you will be urged to send it back immediately.

A quick note on potential fees, there are none!  Some people have asked about whether or not you will receive a fee for not signing your tax return.  Thankfully there are no fees associated with not signing a tax return!

Reminder #2: Sign your tax return and double check!

Another question is regarding the official submission date. The good news is that the IRS will recognize your original tax return submission date not your second filing with the signature.

So, after checking your documents you realize that you did in fact forget to sign your paperwork.  What should you do?  Instead of sending the IRS a note or calling them (they’re pretty busy right now), you should just wait it out.  The IRS will be sending you a notification letter shortly.

Reminder #3: Sign your tax return and double check!

In conclusion,

Now you have been educated on this common but very dumb mistake.  Lesson here is to double check your records or e-file and not worry about having to sign any documents.  You want your tax return as fast as possible so don’t forget to sign it and further delay money that you could use right now!
