Saving Money by Buying in Bulk

by Redeeming Riches on June 17, 2014

Do you know how retail stores, such as Target and Walmart, are able to make money? They buy goods in huge quantities, and are thus able to pick up the goods quite cheaply. Then they sell the goods in smaller quantities to customers after marking up the price, often by 50 percent or more!

Buying in bulk isn’t just limited to companies and other big organizations, however. Average customers can buy in bulk too. In fact, Walmart runs a retail warehouse club called “Sam’s Club” that allows people to buy items in larger quantities and to then enjoy the savings.

Purchasing goods from Sam’s Club, Costco, or another warehouse store can save you as much as 20 percent, on average, vs. shopping at Walmart. Most of the time, you will have to buy larger quantities in order to enjoy the savings, but for many non-perishable necessities, such as toilet paper, there’s no such thing as too much.

For example, a 36 pack of Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Care Jumbo Roll Toilet Paper rolls costs only $29.99 at Costco. If you head to Walmart to buy a 12 pack of the very same toilet paper, you’ll end up paying about $12.99. So, 36 rolls would cost nearly $40 dollars at Walmart! By buying from Costco, you’ll save 25 percent!

Who wouldn’t appreciate having that extra money in their pocket? And sure, 36 rolls of toilet is a lot of “TP”, but is it ever going to expire? While it might take several months to use all of that toilet paper, you will get your use out of it, and you’ll certainly save a lot of money in the long run.

Another great way to save money is to buy “restaurant quality” food that will allow you to cook up food that tastes as good as the food from your favorite restaurant. You can buy such high-quality food at a warehouse club; just look for goods labeled “restaurant quality”. Best of all, if you can cook great food at home for a fraction of the cost, you’ll be less tempted to splurge on eating out!
